About my charity : FORCE FORCE
Force is a Devon based charity committed to people whose lives are affected by cancer. Originally set up in 1987 to fund local cancer research, the Charity has expanded to serve the rapidly changing world of cancer services at a local level. Why local? Simply because anyone diagnosed with cancer deserves the best possible treatment and professional support close to home. In September 2004 we opened a purpose built cancer support centre in the grounds of the RD&E Hospital. The Centre is open five days a week and offers a whole range of non-clinical cancer support services. The aim of these services is to ensure that patients and families are never without good support and information from the time of diagnosis. Despite moving into supportive care, research remains a very important part of our work. FORCE funded research is currently focussed on lung and ovarian cancers. Furthermore, FORCE has also helped fund a new generation of equipment. Anyone treated for cancer locally is likely to benefit from equipment provided by the Charity at a total cost of over £2 million. To cover the cost of these commitments we need to raise £700,000 p.a., all of which comes from voluntary donations.

                                                  ** UPDATE **
I've survived the race and finished in a time of 2:33.47
It was a tough course on a bright sunny day but hasn't put me off doing another

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO'VE DONATED SO FAR, IT REALLY IS MUCH APPRECIATED
For anyone else who'd like to donate, there is still time

***************************************************************************************

Earlier this year my wife Christine was diagnosed with Breast Cancer; during the course of her treatment at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital we were introduced to the excellent cancer support charity FORCE

They provide numerous services to both patients and carers alike which we've found most useful during this trying time.  Like all charities they are constantly in need of funds and I feel I should to do my bit to help.

A few years ago after after quitting smoking I started running and set myself a target of completing a half marathon before I'm 45yrs old and I'm now a year shy of that milestone.

As it seems sensible to link the two desires I'll be running the New Forest Half Marathon on Sunday 21st Sept 2008 to raise funds for FORCE.

Having never run more than 6miles previously, I tried to do some training and succeeded in straining just about every muscle in my right leg and achilles in the left.

Undeterred - well perhaps a bit - the race is still on, so please wish me luck and sponsor my attempt.

My employers - Barclays Global Investors - run a gift matching scheme whereby they will make a matching donation to funds raised - up to a £600 limit.  They've been fabulous about time off for hospital appts and working from home after treatments etc  but lets try and sting them for the full £600!

Thanks
Graham
