Mouth Cancer Foundation Sponsored Walk · 10 November 2008

The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a charity dedicated to helping and supporting those suffering from or at risk of mouth cancer, throat cancer and other head and neck cancers, as well as providing assistance and information on living with mouth cancer for families, friends and carers.

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

Last year, my father was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. He underwent extensive surgery, which included the removal of a significant portion of his tongue. This was reconstructed using a flap taken from his forearm. This was a traumatic and difficult time for all the family until we discovered the Mouth Cancer Foundation. This wonderful small charity provided us with an invaluable source of information, and most importantly, through their amazing forum, unstinting emotional support.

The 26th November is the "1st birthday" of my Dad's new tongue! To mark this anniversary, my daughter and some of her friends have decided to try and raise money for this wonderful charity, as a way of saying thank you to them for all their help and support, and hopefully in the process, to raise awareness of what is perhaps one of the least well known forms of cancer. Therefore, on 30th November, Rosie and her friends will be walking 12 miles in a circular route through rural North Yorkshire.

The Mouth Cancer Foundation was established in June 2004 to provide support for mouth, throat and other head and neck cancer patients and their families. Further information about their work can be found at www.mouthcancerfoundation.org

"Mouth cancer causes more deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer or melanomas. In the UK there were 7,556 cases of mouth, throat and head & neck cancers in 2003. Due to late detection the mortality rate from these cancers is just over 50 per cent. Despite treatment, there were 2,718 deaths in 2005 – that’s approximately one every three hours. The chances of survival are greatly improved if the cancer is detected early and treated rapidly."

"Mouth cancer patients suffer greatly owing to disabilities such as facial deformity, loss of teeth and damage to the tongue and throat, with consequent difficulty in talking and eating in public places. Around 30,000 people are currently living in the shadow of this debilitating disease. Yet they do not receive the attention and support that other cancer sufferers do."

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: The Mouth Cancer Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor Rosie now!

"Please do thank everyone for their donation and please assure them that they did make the right decision, and our funds will be used wisely for the benefit of mouth cancer awareness, as well as support for mouth cancer patients and carers."          Dr Vinod K Joshi - Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation.
