Royal Parks Half Marathon 2009 · 11 October 2009 ·

1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, yet only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK empowers everyone affected, breaking down barriers, improving everyday life, offering trusted support and advancing research towards a cure. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

I'm running the London Parks 1/2 Marathon on 11th October for Wolverhampton Coeliac Society

You might get to see me in a "Naughty" Nurses Outfit  if you sponsor me and read on!!! ;o)

We need to raise £850

OK so I'm here again trying to grab your money for anther worthy cause.

As Many of you will know my  Mum has suffered with Coeliac for over 20 years and to make things worse has had my Dad and even more so me me eating cream cakes and such like in front of her saying " Mmmmmmm you'd like this if you could have it ... its really nice!"

For those that don't know Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac) is not an allergy or simple food intolerance.

In fact it's an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues.

In people with Coeliac disease this immune reaction is triggered by gluten, a collective name for a type of protein found in the cereals wheat, rye and barley. A few people are also sensitive to oats.

In Coeliac disease, eating gluten causes the lining of the gut (small bowel) to become damaged and may affect other parts of the body.

This basically means that you can't eat bread, pasta, cakes, biscuits, etc etc etc all the things we all enjoy. For some just cooking with the same utensils can put them in hospital. This is why I'm running the London parks 1/2 marathon this year, to raise money for the Wolverhampton CUK who have helped Mum and many others and also to say SORRY to Mum for all the cream cakes etc that I've eaten in front of her... Not going to say I'll never do it again but ... hey ;-)

So to help us raise £850 for a great charity I have pledged to were a lovely little number ... yes if the £850 is hit you will see me running round London is a "Naughty" Nurses outfit... you know its worth it so go on sponsor me .. ever penny counts but every get us there quicker!

I say "US" above as I'll be running this with a good friend of mine Doug Rolland, who only started running this year so this is a great achievment for him and he is really putting in the training hours! Keep going buddy! Feel free to have a look at his site, he's also raising money for a great charity  the NSPCC
