My story

Patricia (above) is in her final year at primary school and HOPES to go to secondary school.  And she has bigger hopes too - when she’s older she says she wants to become Sierra Leone’s first female president so that she can help communities like her own find a way out of poverty.

Her family are supportive of her desire to do well and study and her dad allows her to use a hurricane lamp so that she can do her homework each evening.

The school she attended in Gbap was literally falling down around the students’ heads. The roof leaked, rafters would sometimes drop on the children and termites ate their school books. There was no toilet and the children had to go into the bush where there are snakes and wild animals.

A brighter future?

Thanks to Christian Aid’s work in Sierra Leone, Patricia and the other children now have a chance of a brighter future since it helped the community persuade the government to build a new primary school for their children.

Having looked forward to using her new desk and bench for months, Patricia is finally able to study, in safety.

But will she get to go to secondary school? and realise her dream of making a real difference to her community?

Well that really depends on whether you donate.

Please give to provide her and her community with the tools they need to help themselves out of poverty.  Thank you.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now. Thank you.   Gareth

Well folks I made it, despite some truly dreadful weather - 175 miles in 36 hours - Esher to Weymouth via Guildford, Winchester and Salisbury cathedrals - and one ferry! Please sponsor me to help me reach my target of £750 toward Christian Aid's life saving work. Thank you.

Just 48 hours until I get my kit and bike and board the train, start line bound. Training has been much harder than I imagined. Just didn't have the time early on in the schedule. But I think I'll make it, dead or alive!

19/09/12 17:47

- half way through training (sort of) - half way to the event - half way to the fundraising target. Need a big push now - on at least one of those fronts!

Ok so my ankle is still not 100% - getting on for two months since I damaged it. You know you're getting old when your body won't heal like it used to! Nevertheless, I have been out on the bike - only 8 miles, but it's a start. Any encouragement you can give welcome!

Poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their own lives. Christian Aid has a vision - an end to poverty - and we believe that vision can become a reality.
