Story
In May 2008 Owen Manby and Alexis Montaigu don their lycra shorts and embark on a 2000 mile bicycle tour across the continent to the mouth of the Danube, in Romania. We will be raising money throughout the trip for an amazing organisation - 'Hope and Homes for Children' (www.hopeandhomes.org)
'Hope and Homes' have been closing institutions in Eastern Europe since 1998. To date they have closed eleven institutions in Romania alone.
However, this is not where their work stops. They are working with governments in Eastern Europe to not only close state institutions, by moving each individual child into a caring family environment, but also to change outdated attitudes to childcare policy and practice. Closing institutions is just the beginning, not the end and they are helping governments put in place the alternative care systems that will prevent children from entering institutions in the first place!
As part of their pioneering work they have developed a unique model for closing institutions, which has been recognised by international experts, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation as best practice in the field.
This expedition is entirely self funded and NONE of the funds raised go to anything other than 'Hope and Homes' who themselves are a non-profit organisation.
Please please help us to try and make as much of an impact, through 'Hope and Homes', on these issues as we can. Through our Just Giving web site you can donate ANY amount of money and receive Gift Aid on top of your donation. Every £10 that's donated the government will add £2.80.
Thank you.
