Haiti Hospital Appeal Cholera Response

Emergency Treatment and Prevention Program

For a second time this year a National Emergency has hit the little nation of Haiti.

Unless we act it will cripple an already over-stretched and failing health care system. It will hinder the nation's rebuilding after the earthquake that is already struggling for momentum.

Cholera is in danger of destroying the will of every Haitian once and for all. But we don't want this to happen.

The Haiti Hospital Appeal is working closely with other relief organisations in the country-wide response to the deadly cholera outbreak. The aid has been severely hampered by social unrest in towns and cities and exasperated by Hurricane Tomas that struck on the 5th November.

The projections are that over 200,000 Haitians will contract cholera during the next six months to a year, in Cap-Haitian alone they are soon expecting 500 new cases a day. One thing we know is the problem won’t just disappear.

Cholera causes diarrhoea and vomiting, leading to severe dehydration. It can kill quickly, but is treated easily through rehydration and antibiotics. We intend to open a unit very soon to treat these patients. It will be a huge operation as we engage the whole community to provide accessible treatment swiftly and effectively.

Outreach to rural communities and slums is absolutely essential to prevent the spread of the disease. We will be undertaking a huge recruitment drive to resource this work and we require an urgent financial response.

We Won’t Forget

The call once again is to not forget the plight of the people of Haiti. The violence that spread across the nation in response to yet another national crisis is deeply concerning. We must remember that we work with a people that have suffered injustice after injustice. The earthquake in January was devastating and the latest catastrophe has plunged the country into fear, panic and disorder.

Yet we won’t stop trying to bring hope to life in Haiti. We will do our best to save lives, bring calm and restore peace.

To do so we need your help.

Please donate online now - it will make a huge difference.

Thanks for all your continued help and support.
