Jez's Half Ironmum · 6 June 2010

Ocean Youth Trust South offers personal development through Adventure Under Sail to people aged 12-25, mainly disadvantaged or vulnerable in some way. We work with other charities, mainstream and special schools, local authorities and youth clubs to make a real difference to young people's lives.

What am I doing

This June it will be 3 years since my mum passed away.  I have been wanting to do something to raise money in her memory and so I am going to do a half-ironman.  For those not familiar (including me until recently), this involves a 1.2 mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56 mile (90km) bike ride and a 13.1 mile (21.1km) run.  I do get to have a few minutes breather inbetween each event while I change shoes...

As a build up to this, I am going to be doing at least 2 half-marathons, some triathlons and cycling to work.  I have no intention of giving up alcohol...

The Charity

I want to raise money for Ocean Youth Trust South, a sail training organisation I have recently started volunteering with.  They take a crew of 12 underprivileged youths, with 5/6 volunteer staff, on a 72 foot sailing boat.  On family holidays I used to look out at the boats and tell my parents that I would love to have a go but it wasn't until I was 20 that I got the chance.  I appreciate that some people may think cancer charities a more fitting cause to raise money for, but I would rather not raise money to remember how my mum died, but raise money for something I think she would have been very proud of.

So, please dig deep and donate a little something to my pot.  It will make my training and the event more bearable, and may even earn you a pint next time I'm in a pub...
