Story

This summer Marie McHugh, Hannah Johnston, Gail Brown, Fiona Hunter-Johnston, Jenny Douglas and Shiz Gerami are taking on the challenge of a half-ironman. To give you a bit of an idea what we’re up against, it’s a 1.2 mile swim (in a lake) followed by a 56 mile bike ride (involving nearly 6000 ft of climbing) and finished off with a 13.1 mile run (yep, a half marathon)!

We’re doing it to support EducAid, a charity that runs the only free secondary schools in Sierra Leone and a small primary school. This is a country where the life expectancy is 49, and 19% of babies don't reach their 5th birthday. Many of the students are orphans, ex-child soldiers or victims of rape or other trauma. The challenges they face range from limited resources to malaria to widespread corruption, for example in the higher institutions that they apply to. Many of them are housed and fed at the schools - EducAid has become family to many youngsters whose own families have been lost, scattered through the war or broken down. They genuinely are some of the most vulnerable young people in the world. The opportunity to attend one of EducAid’s schools provides them with more than just an education and depends entirely on the generosity of people like you.

You can find out more about EducAid’s amazing work, the day-to-day goings on, and some of the students’ recent achievements at www.educaid.org.uk/ Check out this short video about the Maronka Girls' Safe House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSWvjqvqPE4

Anything you can spare will be huge motivation for us while training and of course on the day, but more importantly it will be greatly appreciated by the children and teenagers that EducAid supports. Thank you for your support.
