Story
A few days ago Haiti was hit with a massive earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter Scale. The offical death toll is 75,000 largely in Port-au-Prince. It is estimated that over 20,000 people have died in the towns south-west of the capital Port-au-Prince including Leogane (pop.134,000, 90% damage), Gressier (pop.25,000, 40% damage), Carrefour (pop.334,000, 50% damage) and Jacmel (pop.34,000, 60% damage). Estimated deaths are well over 100,000, and injured stands at 250,000 with over 1 million people made homeless.
Humanity First responded immediately and medical and relief teams from USA, UK and Canada were imemdiately mobilized to begin the relief activities. HF's team was joined by 2 volunteers from our local Haiti office and has re-established the HF Office (which had been spared major damage) and medical camp in Port-au-Prince. Word of mouth quickly led to a lot of demand. The team of doctors has been seeing a steady stream of patients which has reached hundres in a day however HF managed to deal with these cases. Most of the injuries are broken limbs and infected wounds and some patients were referred to the nearest General Hospital 5 minutes away. Our team is working on the infected and untreated wounds.
