In 2007 what started as a small idea to raise about £600 for the Gurkha Welfare Trust between a few friends grew into a fantastic and humbling experiance when 8 people set out to climb Helvellyn in the Lake District carrying ammunition boxes recreating the supply runs made to the 1st Battalion of 9th Gurkha Rifles who were cut off by day on a point called Hangmans Hill during the battle for Monte Cassino in 1944, at the end of there time on Hangmans Hill the Battalion was counted and it was found that there was only 8 Officers and 177 other men to take the roll call. In all the climb raised over £1000 for the Trust to provide a Pension to the old Gurkha's who have retired to there Homeland of Nepal.
Already for June 21st 2008 there are over 20 people wanting to climb in world war two period uniforms and raise funds for the Trust, the target this year is £2000 every penny of which will be spent by the Trust in Nepal on Pensions for the Men who service in the British Army was their greatest honour.
As well as the climbers on the day there will be a base camp set up in the Beckside Car Park in Glenridding on the banks of Ullswater manned by other volenteers in wartime uniforms along with some Cassino veterans and The Brigade of Gurkha's hope to be able to once again send some serving Gurkha's who where almost overwhelmed in 2007 by the charity and warmth towards them by the public who came along.Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure.
