Post edit on 18/11/09: Ken died at 11 this morning at his home in Cowes surrounded by family. He will be missed x

My Great Uncle Ken was diagnosed with Dementia this year. So When I saw him for the first time in years this summer, I didn’t recognise him, and he didn’t recognise me.

It was unfortunate that the first time I saw Ken in years he wouldn’t be the man I remembered him as. When I was younger he would pop over when I was visiting my Nan on the Isle of Wight. He would bring flumps and other sugar loaded foods, along with smiles and stories. But that afternoon in his bungalow in Cowes it felt so awkward, as being nostalgic meant explaining to help him remember and his concentration was so weak he fell asleep several times.

Today I was told Ken now doesn’t get out of bed. And that he doesn’t recognise anyone, not even his own wife. It’s quite upsetting seeing my Nan, his older sister, trying to cope with the fact she’s loosing her younger brother.

Ken is the reason I want to help the Alzheimer’s Society in their fight to prevent and cure dementia. It’s the disease that creates dead in the living, and tears people away from their families.
