Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I have now achieved my fundraising target and have been blown away by the generosity of family, friends and in some cases complete strangers! Donations are still very welcome as the more money I raise the more difference it makes to the young people and disadvantaged communities Raleigh supports. Please read on to understand just what I'll be getting up to, and why I'm so excited about it...

The what

On the 19th June, with a small team of ambitious (and let's be honest, slightly mad) friends, I hiked the the full breadth of the Peak District in a single day, from my childhood home of Sheffield across the Peaks to my now home in Macclesfield. A 4.30 am start,  38 very hilly miles, 1600m ascent, all in 16 hours. It was a huge challenge and test of stamina. We made it, and arrived in Macclesfield, aching, tired and jubilant, just after 9 in the evening.

Here's what all the effort was for...

The why: Changing lives of young people and communities worldwide

Raleigh run sustainable development projects in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities. I’m taking 3 months unpaid leave from work to join as a volunteer staff member this autumn. I'll be leading one of their projects in rural southern , working alongisde local communities and leading a group of young volunteers who work on the projects.

Raleigh's young volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are still in education. Others come from disadvantaged backgrounds, funded by ’s partnership programme. helps young people develop team work and leadership skills, a sense of responsibility and life purpose, and an understanding of the complex issues in the world around them. I am in no doubt that this will be the biggest challenge I have ever faced, and I am very excited to be involved.

I have commited to raise £2000 for Raleigh as part of my role. I'm paying my own costs such as travel, so every penny I raise will go directly towards ’s work: running development projects; supporting in-country teams who build valuable relationship with communities and project partners; and working with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and the host countries, who otherwise would not have a chance to become involved.
