My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

CHALLENGE DATES:

LONDON MARATHON: 24th April 10

BORNEO ULTIMATE CHALLENGE: 7-17th May 10

Updates:

02/02/10

Well the challenge is all set for 7 May 2010.  Not long to go now....

To make this tough challenge even harder, I will now be running the London Marathon which will be just 12 days before heading out to Borneo.  Even more reason to sponsor me!!

The training is going well and the marathon training will ensure that I get pretty fit before flying out.  My new bike should be with me in a couple of weeks now - well excited but def not excited about getting used to the clip in pedals!

Please help me reach my fundraising target - Any little amount of sponsorship will really help and is greatly appreciated!!!

30/03/09

Well last nights Wii & Poker night was fantastic.  A massive thanks to everyone who came along and made it a great evening and showed so much support.  The evening raised a staggering £1781!!!! £920 was made from the auction and £861 raised from tickets, raffle tickets and cake sales along with additional donations on the night. A HUGE thank you to everyone!!!  :-)

29/03/09

Well the fundraising is well underway and I must say a massive thankyou to everyone who has sponsored me and offered their support so far - it's is really appreciated!!

The Wii & Poker charity night is being held at The Punch Tavern, 99 Fleet St tonight from 6pm.  Tickets £10.00

The night looks set to be a fantastic one with approx 90 due to attend so far.  I have managed to secure some brilliant items for the charity auction so dont forget to bring along your exra £'s!

See you all tonight and more updates to follow on the Wii night success!  :-)

THE CHALLENGE...

Set in Borneo this is a three stage gruelling challenge for me.

Firstly I will be trekking to the summit of Mount Kinabalu which stands at 4,095m and is the highest mountain in South East Asia.  This will take me on a strenous trek through the jungle trails and a 2am start on one morning to reach the granite summit of Lowes Peak.

What goes up, must come down and the descent is meant to be a real toughy!

After battling with the long trek and altitude I will be moving on to stage two...

A bum numbing 170km cycle ride through the Crocker Mountain Range, known as the 'Spine of Sabah'.  This is a very testing ride through the mountains and not to mention even more testing for me as I havent been on a bike for about 15 years!!

I will then embark on my third and final challenge - to raft the rapids of the mighty Padas river! The Padas gushes through the spectacular Padas Gorge and is the ultimate white-water experience in Borneo.

WHY??

Some might say I just love a challenge, others might say that im just bonkers but the real reason I have chosen to do this challenge is to raise money for a charity which is very close to my heart.

Having lost both my Nan & Grandad to Alzheimers, I have experienced first hand the devastating and traumatic effects this progressive disease has on both the sufferer and the family and friends that surround them.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and is a physical disease affecting the brain which leads to the death of brain cells.  There are currently 700,000 people with Dementia in the UK today and it will end the lives of one in three older people.

I have deliberatly picked a challenge which will be really tough for me and that I will need to put in a lot of training to achieve. By doing this I hope you will see how much time and effort is going into this and just how much it means to me and hopefully reflect this with your sponsorship.

HOW WILL YOUR SPONSORSHIP MONEY HELP??

Alzheimer's Society funds research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Every year they invest around £1.5 million in their research programme to improve the quality of life for those with dementia and the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

In Alzheimers Society branches, over a thousand trained staff and more then five thousand volunteers are committed to improving quality of life for people with dementia and those who care for them and as such, they touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week.

Dementia research is seriously under-funded. The government invests eight times less in dementia research than cancer research. If nothing is done now, one million people will develop dementia in the next 10 years.

The sponsorship money I raise will go to help Alzheimers Society to continue the amazing work that they do and to help fund their Quality Research programme.

THE TARGET??

I have a set target of £3000 to raise, although I would love to smash this target and raise much more for this charity which is very close to my heart.

Although the challenge is in September, I have only until the end of June to raise the 80% of the sponsorship.  I will then be running some fundraising events over summer to hopefully raise the rest of the money and more for Alzheimers Society.

WHAT NEXT??

For me...
the training has started!!  You may see me over the coming months wobbling along the road on my bike or even walking a little funny. If im walking funny, you will know that im still trying to get used to the bike saddle!  Ouch!!

For you...Please help by sponsoring me as much as you can - every little bit helps and means so much to me!!!
