Cuba Cycle Challenge 2009 · 23 November 2008

It works with the National Centre of Arts and Music Schools (CNEArt) in Cuba to send and distribute materials to children and young people for music and performing arts education in Cuba.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

I'm taking part in the "Cuba Cycle Challenge 2009" in April to help the "Music Fund for Cuba" - a registered charity supported by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and first established in memory of Kirsty MacColl in 2001.  Monies raised will go towards purchasing essential educational equipment for young Cuban school children and educational projects organised through the Cuban Ministry of Education. Many essential items are in short supply.

We will deliver aid directly to a school for visually impaired children in Havana - where we will be guaranteed a rousing reception from the school Salsa Band. We will also have the opportunity to visit local medical facilities and get a feel for their very different way of life.

I will be undertaking the Challenge with my wife Cathryn and a number of her colleagues from Thompsons Solicitors. As you probably know Cathryn and I are lovers of Cuban music and dance - this will be a particularly special trip for us and an opportunity to see much of the wonderful island of Cuba at a time of celebration for the island - 50 years on from the revolution!

We will set off from Sancti Spiritus (one of Cuba's 7 original Spanish towns) and travel through dramatic rural countryside to Remedios on the Atlantic coast - a total of 350km passing through Trinidad, Cuba's best preserved colonial town and a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will then travel to Havana for a reception and the May Day Festival.

We are delighted to be raising funds for this worthy charity. Our own children benefit from wonderful music and dance facilities and opportunities in their respective schools here in South Wales. Our contribution, with your assistance, will support a number of special organisations who strive to offer similar opportunity to Cuban children.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Music Fund For Cuba gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thank you for your support and sponsorhip.
