BUPA Great North Run 2007 · 30 September 2007 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Heather writes: Dementia has touched our family deeply. My Dad's mother died with dementia as did his eldest brother. His older brother who died two years ago had it too. And so does my Dad.

While we were on holiday some years ago, he said to me "I'm having such a happy time. And the trouble is, I won't remember any of this tomorrow." That's the sad thing about dementia. It's like the pages of a cherished book lovingly written over many years being torn out page by page. And you never know which pages will be torn out next.

The Alzheimer's Society has given us information, and searches for a cure. They campaign for drugs like Aricept to be available to everyone who could benefit, as my Dad has benefited. That's why I decided to take part in the Great North Run to raise money for the society. My son Pete will also be running. It will be his first half marathon.

Some people look at me strangely when I say I intend to run the Great North Run this year. Some involuntarily glance at my girth! But I will do all I can to finish.  If I can't run it, I'll walk. And if I can't walk then I'll stagger.

If you can support our mad gesture by sponsoring us both we'll would be delighted. Just follow the instructions below to sponsor me us online. If you can't, just wish us both well!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alzheimer's Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
