CALUM'S ROAD
On Christmas night 2007 as we were flying from The Gambia to UK to seek medical treatment for Stella, she told me that she felt that she may not have the time left to accomplish all the things she had planned. She asked me if I would ensure that these jobs were completed on her behalf. One of these tasks was to rebuild a road which is a lifeline to the local community and for six months of the year is flooded and very dangerous to use. Naturally I made my promise to her, but I was somewhat daunted when I realised the cost of rebuilding this road. I was telling a very good friend of ours Max Murray, who is also a Trustee of our charity and he told me of a book called Calum's Road. The book tells the story of Calum, who, after years of trying to get his local authorities to repair a road, finally decided to do it himself. It is an inspirational story of a man of great determination.
When they heard the story of Calum's Road the people of this region totally identified with Calum and were inspired by his response to official indifference. They even decided to call it Calum's Road in The Gambia. They now sincerely believe, that with a little help from outside, the communities involved can sort out their own road. They can provide the labour, but materials will need to be purchased and equipment hired which is why we are asking for your help. Like Stella and Calum, I strongly believe that there are no problems, only solutions and this road WILL be built in memory of Stella who loved the area and its people and inspired by Calum who led the way.
