Edinburgh Marathon 2004 · 13 June 2004 ·

BHPS aims to protect the future and welfare of native British hedgehogs and help people better to understand and respect wildlife through education, conservation and the funding of cutting-edge research focussed on hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Story

I did it! A once in a lifetime experience! I completed the whole marathon - 26.2 miles. It took me 4 hours 31 minutes and 27 seconds and I was the 1579th runner to cross the line (2851 runners completed the whole distance).

I'd like to thank all the people who cheered us along the way and so generously donated to help to rescue as many hedgehogs as possible. I'm proud of you! Thank you very much!

Our race goes on. Please keep on supporting us - this is the only way Uist hedgehogs can escape the death penalty for the humans' carelessness.

The Hebredian Island of South Uist is an important breeding area for wading birds. Their population has dropped - unfortunately, it is likely that a major factor is that hedgehogs eat their eggs. The Uist Wader Project (UWP) decided to KILL all the hedgehogs, who where initially introduced to the island by people in the seventies to control garden slugs.

We believe firmly that relocation of the hedgehogs to the mainland is a far preferable solution and is as practical as aiming to exterminate them.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: British Hedgehog Preservation Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Many thanks for your support!
