BHPS gives advice to the public about care of hedgehogs, particularly when injured, sick, orphaned, treated cruelly or in other danger; encourages the younger generation to value and respect their natural wildlife and funds research into the behavioral habits of hedgehogs to ascertain the best methods of assisting their survival.

My story

Dear Friends

I completed the marathon in 4 hours and 42 seconds and Uist Hedgehog Rescue saved 241 hedgehogs this year.

Thank you all who gave us a cheer! Thank you all who supported us!

The Hebredian Islands of North and South Uist and Benbecula are the important breeding areas for wading birds. Their population has dropped - unfortunately; it is possible that a contributing factor is that hedgehogs and other predators eat their eggs. The Uist Wader Project (UWP) decided to KILL all the hedgehogs, who were initially introduced to the island by people in the seventies to control garden slugs.

We believe firmly that relocation of the hedgehogs to the mainland is a far preferable solution than unnecessary extermination.
