As some of you may know I will be running the London marathon this year for the Leicester Hospitals Charity, for my pal, Gareth Palmer.

In February 2007, my good friend Gareth Palmer was rushed to Stoke Mandeville hospital with severe pneumonia.  He was sedated and put on a ventilator. Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated and he developed septic shock and multi-organ failure.  His lungs had failed and he was unable to get enough oxygen to his vital organs.  His condition was serious and he had to be moved to the Glenfield Leicester Hospital in order to improve his chances of survival.  He was given a treatment, under clinical trials at the time, called ECMO.

ECMO works by pumping oxygen directly into the blood circulation.  In Gareth’s case it did the job that his lungs were not doing, supplying oxygen to his vital organs so that his body could fight the infection.  After a 6-week battle he recovered.

I am absolutely delighted to say that I will be running the marathon this year with a fighting fit Gareth Palmer (as you can see in the photo!).  He is able to do this because of the truly remarkable treatment and care he received in Leicester during his stay there.

I have no doubt that the ECMO treatment and the care he received at the Glenfield Leicester Hospital saved Gareth’s life.

I would really appreciate it if you could dig deep and sponsor me for completing the marathon with my friend so that wonderful success stories like this can become a regular occurrence.

Since Gareth’s ECMO experience the ECMO trial has been completed and the treatment has been proven to improve survival rates for adults with severe respiratory failure, and the money I raise will provide funding for the unit.  If you would like to find out more about the treatment follow the link below.
