<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">This year Heidi was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. </span><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac) is not an allergy or simple food intolerance. In fact it's an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. In people with coeliac disease this immune reaction is triggered by gluten, a collective name for a type of protein found in the cereals wheat, rye and barley. Even the slightest crumb of gluten can cause an attack and therefore we have had to learn to be extremely careful with cross contamination of food. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Heidi is now thriving on a gluten free diet and we are all adapting well to the changes we have had to make. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: 11.5pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Coeliac UK relies on donations to assist with providing support, campaigning to improve medical treatment and safe foods, research into new treatments and hopefully one day, a cure. </span></span></p>
