Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page! I’ve set it up to raise money for The Walk Centre in Nakuru, Kenya, where I spent two weeks as a volunteer in August 2012.

The residents of the Hilton slum in Nakuru live on the edges of the town’s rubbish dump and experience high levels of poverty, unemployment and poor health. Parents struggle to provide their children with shelter, food and clothing, let alone send them to government-run schools which charge fees for attendance.

The Walk Centre was established by Alex and Patricia Maina (both teachers and respected members of the local community) to give the children living in the slum a basic education, regular meals and emotional support. Their families are also provided with financial assistance wherever possible, to enable them to have access to medical care, food and housing maintenance.

The centre receives no government support and relies on charitable donations. Having seen first-hand the difference that The Walk Centre makes to children’s lives, I want to encourage my friends and family to contribute to its vital work.
