Ayann is 22.  For the last 20 years she has been living with horrific facial wounds after she was shot in the bitter civil war that destroyed much of Somalia in the 1980s.

Eating for Ayaan is hard, as the food spills from the hole in her face.  She keeps her disfigurement hidden from the world and lives in shame.  The only mercy, perhaps, is that she was too young to remember the shooting. All she does know is a life lived in the shadows.
