RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.

Story

This must be some kind of adrenaline-seeking early mid-life crisis!  Agreeing to abseil 170 feet (50 metres) down Baitings Dam near Halifax in West Yorkshire, and then going back up to the top to zip-slide down it.

If you've not heard of zip-sliding before, it's also called 'death-sliding' (nice, huh?!) and basically involves going from a high point to a low point by sliding down a rope at great speed. (see this video on YouTube).

As someone who has spent most of his life living near the sea, I'm a big supporter of the RNLI.  I used to spend my summer holidays staying with my granddad on the Lincolnshire coast and we'd regularly see the lifeboat personnel head out on a rescue, and I remain impressed with the dedication of those who risk their lives, voluntarily, to save others.

But the RNLI don't only operate at sea: last year their Rapid Response Unit helped rescue people trapped when the summer floods came to South Yorkshire, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire.  So even if you never set foot on a boat, you never know when you may need the expertise of the RNLI.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The RNLI will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28 per cent in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Please support me on my mad quest to raise money in aid of their vital service.

Thanks,
Mark
