Story

Homes for Oxford is working with the Oxfordshire Community Foundation to support a community-led bid for the Wolvercote Paper Mill site in North Oxford.

Homes for Oxford is a coalition of local community-led housing organisations, addressing the need for permanently affordable housing, who wish to create strong mixed tenure communities of market rate and permanently affordable homes to enable long term social and economic viability.

 We ensure:

  • a good return/land value for the University (the landowner)
  • massive reputation benefit to the University and to the City
  • long term social and environmental benefits to the local community in Wolvercote and the wider city of Oxford.

Our proposal:

  • Clusters of zero carbon pedestrianised homes with one central spine road;
  • Significantly reduced car ratios of one per household or less across the whole site (190 cars max and not the 382 covered in existing outline plan), made possible by extensive car-sharing and use of car clubs. There will be a frequent bus service to and within the development. The reduced need for parking will free up space and reduce strain on the already overworked infrastructure;
  • The 50% (more if we can manage it) affordable homes will be permanently affordable via Land Trust and Coop mechanisms, i.e. not for sale, thus ensuring the community will remain a mix of owner occupied and rented homes in perpetuity.

Homes for Oxford believe that we offer the best proposal for this site for both the University, the City, and the local community.

Donations:

For a community-led bid to succeed Homes for Oxford need as many people as possible to declare their support for their proposal and we believe one of the best ways to achieve this is for everyone to share their interest and inspire more people to get involved.

Please donate whatever you can afford using this page but should you prefer to send a cheque or discuss more significant amounts then do call the Oxfordshire Community Foundation direct for more details on 01865 798666.

Your donation will show your support for affordable housing in Oxford and will secure a part of Oxfordshire for the purposes of innovative, affordable and sustainable housing.  The more community support we can demonstrate, the more likely it is for our bid to be successful.

This project represents a David and Goliath challenge, the likes of which have never been seen on UK shores before.  Will you join us in daring to challenge the status-quo and address our ever-deepening housing crisis?

Thank you
