I cried out in pain. And when I realized what had happened, I began to shake in disbelief. Then a question occurred to me but I did not want to ask the doctors so I asked myself instead. Is this a nightmare? I tried to get out of bed then gazed around the room but it was hard to see my surroundings, mainly because I was lying flat on my back. The next moment my girlfriend put her hands gently on my head and stroked me almost absentmindedly as if she was consoling herself over my death. Dr Schneider was sitting at the dressing table reviewing my x-rays and constantly glancing at me. I remember she was wearing a gold chain on her wrist. She suddenly sat on the side of my bed. It was difficult for me to relax as I feared I was to be given bad news. Suddenly, all was silent. She was wearing her surgery uniform with a white hospital coat. At that moment nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary. She  begin to explain to me that I had been involved in a very serious accident and had been undergoing surgery for more then seven hours. She added that it had been a very delicate and complicated operation. As she continued, I felt a cold breeze, she must have felt it too as she stared at the closed window. Then she resumed and gravely informed me that I would be unlikely to walk or use my hands again. She stepped back a little and the only thing I could see was a black silhouette against the softly lighted room. Then I swallowed slowly and tried to compose myself and say something or ask her a question. But I didn't. I couldn't. "Get out!" I shouted.
