HOVERCRAFT ON THE RIVER AVON

 

This is the first time that this has been attempted. These will be the first Hovercraft to pass under the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Hovercraft will pass Cumberland Basin at approx 1.30 pm and  2.45 pm.  These times are subject to variation due to weather and river traffic.

 

Portishead Lifeboat is independent and not part of any other organisation.  The area covered is from Clevedon to Avonmouth and up the tidal RIver Avon to Bristol.  If you use the river, walk along the banks or swim in the sea, sail or just visit the local beach, the Lifeboat is there to rescue you if you have problems.

As a fundraiser, we are organising a little piece of history.  A small group of sea going hovercraft will  launch from Shirehampton, by kind permission of the Shirehampton Sailing Club and the Bristol Haven Master and travel up the river to Cumberland Basin and then to Netham Weir before returning to Shirehampton.

This will be the first time that a hovercraft has ever made this journey and we are asking for sponsorship.  The hovercraft pilots will all be making a contribution, passengers will be raising funds from sponsorship, and we would be grateful if you can help the charity by making a donation on line.  Its very simple to do and means so much to the Lifeboat crew who turn out at any time and in any weather and risk their lives to help others.

If you want to come and watch, the craft can be seen from any SAFE vantage point on the tidal Avon, but please don't try to access the river banks as they are very slippery and dangerous.  The Portway, Cumberland Basin and Coronation Road should be good points to watch.

If the weather prevents us operating, the event will be rescheduled.
