We are raising funds for the Akanksha School Project.  The Akanksha Foundation is an established Indian non-profit organization with a mission to impact the lives of children from low-income communities, enabling them to maximize their potential and transform their lives.

The School Project is a venture to open high-quality schools serving children from low-income communities in Mumbai and Pune.  These schools are in partnership with local municipalities, with the vision of creating small clusters of model schools in these cities that can be used to impact the mainstream education system.

We intend to direct donations collected as wedding presents to the Matoshri English Medium School (MEMS), an Akanksha school in Yerawada, Pune, close to Karuna's family's home.  As a family, we intend to build an ongoing partnership with the Yerawada school, through both monetary donations, and through personal volunteering.

Matoshri English Medium School (MEMS) started in June 2009 and currently has junior kindergarten through 3rd standard.

All children come from the six major slum communities located around the school. They belong to low-income families where most of the fathers are engaged in unskilled jobs, and mothers are mostly housewives. Parents are considered equal stakeholders in the school, through monthly meetings and PTA’s (Parent Teacher Associations). MEMS has a strong group of dedicated parent-volunteers.
