In order to raise funds for Brighton, Hove and District Samaritans, a group of colleagues from OneFamily in Brighton (plus a couple of friends of OF) have decided (or slightly coerced for some) to take part in an abseil down Brighton's i360 to raise funds for Brighton, Hove and District Samaritans. We will go up the normal way in the pod to the top, when the doors will open and 1 by 1 we will take a more open route down, on a rope - this is no usual abseil as there is nothing like a rock face to steady yourself on, just you a rope and lots of air.. Standing at 453ft high ( for those who have never seen the i360, the London eye at its highest point is 433ft), it will be challenging to say the least, esp as some of the group would not climb a step ladder as they are so scared of heights.
The event takes place on the 21st of September 2019 from 6pm - please feel free to come along and watch.
OneFamily will fund match up to £500 per person, so the more we raise, the more will be matched.
Below is a list of people taking part and in their own words:
What they think will be most challenging / Why they are supporting Samaritans
Andy Hefford
Ben Trower
Going over the edge, I'm petrified of heights / following the loss of a friend to suicide some years ago in the middle of the night, Samaritans provide support 24 hours a day and all year round.
Charlotte Coulson
Looking down! Big heights make me feel sick../Samaritans is a charity very close to my heart having lost a loved one through suicide. Life has its challenges. Having a support service available to us all when we could be vulnerable and in desperate need of help is pretty amazing to me. Any contribution will add value to support the continuation of this fantastic charity.
Clare Allum
I will be very proud to (nervously) abseil down the i360 in support of the wonderful work Samaritans do. I hope we can raise some money to help them keep doing what they do. Such a fantastic cause, I cant wait to get the lycra catsuit on!
Clare Thompson
Gavin Deeble
Going over the edge/Like many charities, the Samaritans is financially un great pressure and provide a fantastic service to some of the most troubled and lost people - every penny helps
Harry Bransdon
Not bottling it when I get to the top / There isn't an other cause i'd rather do it for.
Joseph Todd
Im just hoping I don't bottle it when I get to the top. I have just moved back to a desk where the i360 stares at me every time I glimpse out of the window which is haunting/I personally have a lot of friends and family around me who suffer with their mental health, The Samaritans do a great job of helping the prevention of suicide. There is no charity I would rather do it for.
Karolina Szczygiel
Leanne Taylor
Stepping over the Edge/ Samaritans support so many individuals that are having constant emotional battles which in some cases lead to suicide. I'm proud to be raising money for a charity that can help support and prevent suicide.
Mark Campbell
Stepping out of the doors at 454ft - esp if its windy / Following the loss of my partner through suicide, I became involved in the Samaritans as a listening volunteer to try to reduce the number of suicides - Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK and Samaritans provide a space for people to talk openly without judgement and in confidence
Matt Draper
The Fashion - boiler suits and sports gear are not designed for a little man such as I. I am anxious I may look like I have been shrunk in the wash / The Samaritans do exceptional work both locally and nationally - I am proud to have several friends and colleagues who have worked for them over the years. Having experienced the impact of suicide first hand and witnessed the support the Samaritans offer, I'm delighted to do my bit to contribute and raise awareness of a worthy and increasingly necessary cause.
Rob Brown
Samuel Boore
Victoria Steadman
The most challenging part will be going over the edge, once started hope I will be fine, but the nerves will be building up before / The Samaritans is such a worthwhile cause. To have a beacon of hope that might just tip the scales in the right direction is vital. Everyone needs someone who will listen tot hem when times are tough and the raise money to enable this to be an option for everyone is an honour.
