Hey all,
Thanks for coming.
I'm Ian, I'm a 23 year old guy and I live in Birmingham, but originate from Cornwall. I've been meaning to do this for several years, and patted it off with excuses of "next year" for quite long enough. I want to challenge myself to do something that I've never done before and would never usually do, whilst at the same time raise money for a good cause.
The charity I want to raise money for is Macmillan Cancer Support. Every year more than a quarter of a million people are diagnosed with some form of cancer; that's mums, dads, uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters. 1/3 of people will develop some for of cancer in their lives. It effects everyone in some way. Personally, my gran has cancer. Currently it's incurable. I've also got a friend who's wife has just got the all clear from her cancer.
Macmillan Cancer Support helps to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. They provide practical, medical and financial support and push for better cancer care. So Macmillan seemed like the obvious choice of charity to support, and I hope that with your support I can raise the money to make a real difference.
So... What am I going to do to convince you to part with your hard earned cash?
My Challenge:
I will be flown to around 13,000 feet, before jumping out of the door of the aircraft accompanied by (but not attached to) two British Army Parachute Association instructors.. I will then drop in freefall towards the ground at 200 Feet per second (120mph) for around 45 seconds (7000ft) at which point I will deploy my own parachute and fly myself into the landing zone, hopefully landing on two feet!
However... Lots of people do a jump either attached to, or at least with instructors.
I wanted my challenge to be a bit different, so I will be attempting to complete an accelerated freefall course in a weekend! That means a day of ground school, followed by a total of 8 jumps. One of these jumps will be with NO instructor. This jump will be filmed as evidence of my craziness, and I'll upload it to youtube so that all fo you (my sponsors) can see! =P
Interestingly, Although I've flown in planes a fair bit, I've always landed in the plane I've taken off in. This will be the first time (first EIGHT times in fact) that I've taken off *in* a plane, only to land *without* it, having jumping out at 13,000ft beforehand.
