On September 7th 2008 Ian Welton, Independent Mortgage and Insurance Adviser, for English Mutual, will be competing in the Ironman UK Triathlon.

Ian, 29, a father of three and a keen athlete has taken on this challenge in support of fly 2 help in association with the Wealth of Happiness Foundation.

In preparation for the triathlon Ian will be completing 2½ hours pool and/or gym each weekday before work; short runs and cycle work most evenings, including circuit training. During the week he will also be completing 3 large separate sections, made up of 100 minutes of swimming,

up to 120 minutes of continuous running and a 6 hour cycle stint! Saturdays are his day off to spend time with his family.

The Ironman UK triathlon is located at the historic Sherborne Castle in Dorset.

The majority of the race is completed within the grounds of the castle with the swim contested in the 50 acre lake and the bike and run taking the competitors around the stunning estate grounds and surrounding area of Dorset and Somerset.

SWIM-2.4 MILES
The swim is a deep water start, with competitors spread across the lake before narrowing and funnelling to the left hand side of the out and back swim, through a ‘dogleg’ right. Water temperature is 19oC.

BIKE- 112 MILES
The bike race starts around 200 yards from the castle gate and leads riders from a flat straight road with good visibility, into a series of climbs and back again to the castle.

 RUN- 26.2 MILES
The Saucony run course takes competitors out of the castle. Runners emerge into New Road, before heading into Sherborne Town. For this section they will be running through and past some of the history that has made Sherborne famous, such as Sherborne Abbey, which last year celebrated its 1300th birthday.

(The race cut off time is 17 hours).
