The Challenge
This August a team of 17 from Chelmsford will be travelling out to Anapolis in Southern Brazil to spend 2 weeks volunteering at the Instituto Cristao Evangelica De Goias (ICEG!), an orphanage for around 150 children aged 0 - 18 years old.
The team have already fundraised to cover their travel costs and are now working hard to raise an additional £20,000 to use at the orphanage, buying building materials and much needed supplies for the children there.
Many of the buildings around the orphanage are falling into disrepair. ICEG receives no statutory support for its services despite receiving many cases from the local courts and social services each month.
With this money we plan to:
Rebuild the Litte Girls House (a building for 40 girls aged 2 - 11yrs)
Repair the play area
Relay the main paths around the buildings
Purchase Musical Instruments and Play equipment for the Children
Install cupboards and lockers for the Teenage Boys
The list is endless and the need is great, so will you help us reach our target?
A Bit more about the Orphanage
The Instituto Evangelica de Goias is a Christian orphanage situated in Anapolis in the south of Brazil, near Sao Paulo. The orphanage was founded in 1956 by missionaries and currently provides a home to around 180 children (although its official capacity should only be 150). The home receives little ongoing financial support towards its monthly running costs and has had little investment since it opened 50 years ago. As a result many of the buildings are slowly falling into disrepair.
The Children at the orphanage come from a variety of backgrounds; some are short term visitors while others have spent the majority of their life living there. Some of the children are true orphans, others have been sent by the local courts after suffering from abuse or neglect, while others are simply abandoned by their parents at the gate. Each case is different and the staff at the orphanage have no idea what they will be dealing with from one week to another. And yet here, at ICEG, these children from 0 - 18 years are being brought up with love and attention that they otherwise would not have.
Hand in Hand have been working with ICEG since 2004 to raise funds to improve the facilities at the orphanage, many of which have not been improved or upgraded since it was first built over half a century ago. In that time we have helped complete the rebuilding of the Little Boys House, renovated the Baby Unit and provided the money for vital emergency repairs to the main hall after sever storm damage.
