Il Cammino - Rome to Bari (approx. 560 kms)
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
No doubt this walk will be a big challenge, but it is also for a good cause. Eric has done many a walk in his time, but for Sam and Elina, this is their first serious distance walk. Our preparation (buying a couple of pairs of hiking shoes) has so far been a great success, but the hard part is yet to come.
The walk will begin on 1 May 2009 and finish on or about 18 May 2009, which makes an average of about 30 kilometres per day.
Eric has been an avid walker for years, exploring many of the more interesting trails that Europe has to offer. In particular, Eric has trekked the Italian portion of the Via Francigena, a historical trail that runs from Canterbury to Rome passing through England, France, Switzerland and Italy. The Via Francigena was a key component of a network of trails European pilgrims used for thousands of years. Our route from Rome to Bari has been called the Southern Via Francigena and was used by pilgrims travelling from Rome to southeastern Italy where they would take a boat as they continued their trip towards Jerusalem. For more information on the Via Francigena, please check out Eric's site www.walkforitaly.com. He will be updating the site daily during our walk with text, photos and videos.
We are walking for Cricket Without Boundaries (CWB) which is a charity dedicated to helping, educating and developing local communities around the world through the spread and growth of cricket. Crucially, CWB also uses cricket as a tool in the fight against AIDS. For more information on CWB, visit their website (www.cricketwithoutboundaries.com).
