Story

"Any contribution is a brick to help the wall stand" (Imran Yousaf Saddique 2010)

I will be undertaking the challenge to Bungee Jump from 300ft, the UK's highest jump on 16 May 2010 over the Manchester Quay.

My choice of charity is the East Lancashire Deaf Society, I made this choice primarily based on the importance of the work the charity undertakes and as an effort to contribute to a local charity. People who are deaf face great challenges in life and the support which this charity provides contributes towards helping those in need to achieve independence in life.

ELDS’s main concern is for the Deaf person in the community and that person’s right to full participation, to the same opportunities in education, employment, access and involvement as anyone else.  ELDS achieves its vision through three main routes: Advocacy, Information and Services

The ELDS Youth Service works towards empowering deaf young people to develop their skills, confidence
and opprtunities as individuals. It also works to promote the social inclusion of Deaf young people in the wider community.

We aim to achieve this in the following ways:

Active Participation - Deaf young people are encouraged to take on some responsibility and work collectively with their peers. They are also encouraged
to be involved with committees, councils or community groups.

Promoting Diversity - Challenges are offered to Deaf young people about their
views on race, gender, disability and equality issues.  They are encouraged to
display tolerance and sensitivity to the rights and feelings of others.

Access to Opportunities - We offer a range of activities, which give Deaf young people the opportunity to be socially included, grow in confidence and achieve
higher levels of self esteem.

Partnership - We works actively with other agencies, organisations and groups for networking, information sharing and to deliver programmes or activities for
Deaf young people.

Advocacy - Deaf young people are given the opportunity to discuss issues and
respond appropriately.  They are given access to information which informs their
points of view and helps them to think about issues in an empowered way.
