Our Story

At our 12 week scan Beth and I were told that we were having identical twins. This was wonderful news but our joy was short lived when the sonographer noticed different sized sacks around them.We were referred to Southampton for two further appointments where we were diagnosed with suspected twin2twin and further referred to St George's in London.

On visiting St George's we were told that actually we had a rarer condition called Selective Intrauterine Growth Restriction where there was an unequal share of the placenta. Twin 1 the smaller twin had a 10% share and twin 2 the larger twin had 90% of the placenta.

The diagnosis for twin 1 was bad but there was optimism for twin 2. At this stage we named twin 1 Molly and twin 2 Megan. We were told to return at 17 weeks where the vessels between the twins in the placenta could be lasered to stop blood flow between them and to prevent an adverse reaction when Molly passed away. When we arrived the day before for the scan we were told that Molly had passed away.

We returned every two weeks to St Georges for further scans and at 23 weeks fluid was noticed on Megan's brain. We subsequently had an MRI scan and were told that Megan had sever brain damage and would be physically and mentally disabled. We were left with a decision to make along with consultants and it was felt that Megan would not have any quality of life and we decided with heavy hearts that the pregnancy should be terminated.

on 8th August Beth gave birth to Megan and Molly at Basingstoke hospital where all the staff were amazing. On 13th August we had a funeral for them but could only register Megan because she was 24 weeks + where Molly was only 16 weeks. We named Megan, Megan Molly Cross so that they could both be remembered on the deatha nd birth certificate. We have some pictures that give us comfort and pain.

Beth has found comfort by using ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) where she speaks to mums who have suffered similar circumstances. 23rd November was the original due date though twins normally go about 4 week earlier. On 23rd November each year we will remember them and this year we will scatter their ashes.

It is for this reason that I have decided to run for ARC and in memory of Megan and Molly and would appreciate your support in raising as much money as possible. No donation is too small. Thank you for reading our story and we hope that you feel our cause is worth supporting.

Thank You!

Jools and Beth (In Memory of Megan and Molly)
