My story

The Rickshaw Run ...

....

starring Emma & Laura Brookes, Iain Finch, Rob Turner and Paul Taylor

This story begins with an email sent to this bunch of crazy-but-wonderful people who seriously considered the suggestion of 2 weeks thundering the length of India with no preparation, even less luggage and cramped 3-a-piece into a 150cc glorified lawnmower (a Rickshaw). Of course, as moderately intelligent rational people (!), we all did our research. We proceeded to read about the humble Rickshaw; how it is undoubtedly the worst long distance, off-road machine ever designed especially when trying to hustle through the Rajasthan desert. General concenus though is that we have failed to appreciate the desert is the least of our worries - we will be driving through Indian cities!!! Ok ok, lets read up on Indian road rules...... “you start on the left of the road, unless it is occupied. In that case, go to the right, unless that is also occupied. Then proceed by occupying the next available gap, as in chess.” Oh and apparently the dotted white lines are considered wholly advisory by the 1.3 billion Indians, most of whom believe in reincarnation!

So why are we doing it?

We are trying to raise money for an amazing charity called FRANK Water Projects. These guys provide access to clean water for people living below the poverty line in India. This charity really helps save lives in the very villages we will be thundering through and they absolutely couldn't do what they do without donations. 780,000 deaths a year in India are directly linked to poor quality water and sanitation, with a shocking 75% of these deaths occurring in children under the age of five. Clean water is a huge issue to tackle, but every pound we raise could give one person access to clean water for life.

Since 2005, FRANK Water Projects has allocated funding for 78 clean water projects in Andhra Pradesh, India, benefitting over half a million people.

Each project costs approximately £7000 and provides clean, safe drinking water for up to 7,000 people in the surrounding communities. Once a project has been set up, it is owned, run and maintained by the local community, local operators (from that specific village) are trained to operate and maintain the facility. Villagers pay an average of 3 rupees for every 20 litres of safe drinking water. This price is set by FRANK Water's local NGO partner and is very affordable (est. £3.50 per year for clean, safe drinking water).
