Vidyanjali Village Reading Groups

I am currently working as a volunteer to help create women’s reading groups  in rural India as a means to encourage literacy, and help people find ways to improve their lives and get out of poverty.

Vidyanjali is a Telegu word which means "disseminating knowledge". Hence, the project aims to encourage literacy by bringing books to illiterate women in villages of Andhra Pradesh in India.

The programme aims to form “Women's Village Reading groups”. It will involve groups of women reading books together which cover subjects that relate to the problems and difficulties central to their lives, or which offer them information or ideas for increasing their family income.

The programme is being run by CIVA (Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action), which has already developed a publishing programme to create books relevant to people’s needs and lives, and a village libraries programme to bring books to people. Vidyanjali Village Reading Groups are an extension of this work.

We believe very strongly that literacy is an essential component of development. Without literacy, poor people will continue to be taken advantage of, will be denied access to better job opportunities, and will have a lower sense of self-worth.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Centre For Innovation In Voluntary Action will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
