Story
Sink or swim time....
"How about we swim to the Isle of Wight, it doesn't look that far and we can raise some money for charity as well"
Genius.....now after all the banter, big talk, claims of former swimming glories (Tim) and various 'iron men' raising the stakes and setting training schedules in random lakes around london at 6am on saturday mornings.....we actually have to do it. Gosport to Ryde....
Aside from the fact we could sink on the way, be swept out into the English channel, be attacked by a whole variety of sea creatures (jellyfish, sharks, sting rays or whatever else your imagination can conjure up) or be obliterated by the Royal Navy on manoeuvres as we swim through the shipping lane....it is actually a pretty long way.
Since agreeing to take up the challenge it turns out that a point-to-point 3 mile(ish) swim will actually probably take us amateurs about 3 hours and will involve months of training, chafing in unflattering wet suits in sensitive places, drinking a great deal of sea water and vomiting it back up and then swimming through it, and a whole world of abuse for whoever comes last.
On the upside we have managed to get 9 brave and idiotic souls who actually think this would be a fun thing to do and we will be swimming to the Isle of Wight on 29th August 2008 (with back up dates in September in case the weather is against us)
We will be raising money for the Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguard in order to help them to continue the fantastic work they do in saving lives and making the south coast a safe place for people to enjoy.
If you can make a donation to support this event and great cause it would be fantastic!!
