Story
Hi, I'm Iwan. I am a 49 year old headteacher; overweight, unfit and I look like my shirt was ironed over a wok. And I've made a really big decision.
In what will be my 50th year, for the first time in my life, I am going to run a marathon. The London marathon. On the 24th April 2016. I know that it has come as a surprise to many.
I am really not that keen on running. I never have been. The only reason I am putting myself through this ordeal is to raise money for Diabetes UK. Diabetes affects millions of people. 3.3million in the UK and an estimated 590,000 more who may have diabetes and are not even aware of it. As a family we have been affected by Type 1 diabetes, the insulin dependent type, and as a headteacher I have been surprised by the number of young children who have Type 1 diabetes. The daily routine of blood testing and treatments, which includes regular daily injections of insulin, is incredibly tough for these kids and their families. But I am always amazed and inspired by their incredible resilience and determination to the make the most of life despite the challenges of this disease.
Diabetes Uk are the UK's leading diabetes charity. They care for, connect with and campaign alongside and on behalf of all people affected by and at risk of diabetes. They are the UK's largest charitable funders of diabetes research and search relentlessly for life-changing breakthroughs that improve diabetes care, treatment and prevention. And I want to help them succeed. But I need your help. I'll do the running, and I am asking you to do the donating. Please support me by giving generously.
