My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page!

I am taking part in a '50 miles in 24 hours' sponsored walk on 17th July 2009 in support of Climb. Jack was diagnosed with Biotinidase Deficiency (BD) on 29th May 2008 when he was just 9 months old.

Before diagnosis he had been suffering for a number of months with seizures, developmental delay, skin disorders, infections, pneumonia and lethargy. Our gorgeous little boy was in pain alot of the time, was listless, confused and unhappy.

However, on diagnosis we discovered just how lucky we are. BD is one of the few treatable metabolic diseases and Jack's recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. He will be on medication for the rest of his life but that is a very small price to pay for having him with us.

We have received constant support from health professionals in the UK and abroad, have been in touch with dozens of parents of children all over the world with the same condition and have received advice from Climb regarding Jack's condition.

BD is not tested for at birth, and is only diagnosed in around a dozen cases every year in the UK. More research into BD and the hundreds of other metabolic conditions is vital if we are to see more babies, like Jack, survive and thrive.

Please support me in my efforts to walk 50 miles in 24 hours. It's going to hurt! But nothing compared to the pain that Jack went through, and that families all go through in living with these painful, debilitating, and often degenerative conditions.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Climb gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Alternatively, drop me a line if you'd like to join the walk at any time. My email address is si_j_peacock@yahoo.co.uk. Your support would be great!

Thanks for looking!

UPDATE 4/3/09: Two pieces of really good news this last week. The first is that I will be joined on the walk by my mate Jim from work. He's promised to carry me if I start flagging. Thanks for doing this Jim - really appreciated.

And secondly, our company, Bovis Lend Lease, have agreed to match the first £1000 of donations that we raise! Really great news - I hope to make sure they pay the full amount...

UPDATE 24/3/09: Jim and I have hit our original target of £1000 and I have heard that I will receive the cheque matching this from our company in the next few days. This takes the total so far to over £2000! Thanks everyone!!

UPDATE May 2009: The momentum gathers! Not to be outdone Aussie Mark has crazily agreed to cycle the route. Not once, but 4 times, in the same 24 hour period that Jim and I walk it. Are there any more madmen out there? I'm looking for someone to hop! Seriously, Mark, you're a star and we really appreciate you doing this mate. Now get training and send all your mates to this page!

UPDATE July 2009: The month is here... less than 3 weeks to go and terror has set in. Mark has had to buy a new bike after being knocked off old faithful, Jim is still looking for his walking boots and I'm sure I'm less fit now than I was when I started training for this madness. Still, we're all (kinda) looking forward to it. And looking forward even more to the end of it. Everyone has been so helpful and supportive - it's too hard to name everyone on this page but it has been so amazing to receive all the support - thank you - and see you on the other side!

UPDATE July 2009: Remember the date folks - 1st July 09 is the date we broke the £3000 barrier. Thanks to adding the totals on sponsor forms from Mark and Jim we have managed to break our target. Thanks to everyone that has donated money - it really does all help and Kate and I are so grateful to everyone for all the support we have received.
