Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Eaga in association with its registered charitable partners, Childreach & Madfoundation, are committed to a five year project in the Jharkhand region of India.

The eaga Partnership Trust are paying all logistical costs of the project leaving the participants the task of securing funds for the charity partners to provide resources in the form of skilled labour from the local community and building materials as required. This enables every penny raised to go directly to the project.

The project is designed around 45 people spending two weeks in the area, every year for the next five years. Undertaking numerous tasks such as renovating school buildings, building teacher accommodation blocks, toilet facilities and water wells plus irrigation channels and if enough money is raised providing renewable energy sources.

The project is located in Kuchai block in the district of Saraikela Kharsawan. This district is predominately rural with the majority of the population involved in agriculture and subsistence farming.

Kuchai town is the local administrative centre for Kuchai block with basic amenities including a rural clinic, police station and a few basic shops with limited stocks. Kuchai block is made up of 10 panchayats and 100 villages with a total block population of 53801 (census 2001).

The actual project is in the village of Marhamjhanga, set in a beautiful location among paddy fields, forest and spectacular hills in at an elevation of 370 metres. It is approximately 25 minutes drive from Kuchai.

Marhamjhanga is a very small and impoverished tribal village comprising a population of approximately 300, all living in mud houses. There are several neighbouring villages in the area which are equally needy. The village has hardly any amenities or facilities. There are no recognisable shops, no mains electricity (there are some government donated solar panels), no running water or phone lines.

Marhamjhanga has an extremely dilapidated government primary school (standards 1-5) with 2 classrooms. The structure consists of mud covered walls, earth floor and a tiled roof, half of which has fallen down, making one of the 2 classrooms practically unusable and unsafe.

100 yards away there are foundations, walls and concrete lintels of a replacement 3 classroom block primary school left unfinished 2-3 years ago following the death of the headmaster.

During our time in Marhamjhanga we will be working with local craftsmen and labourers and together we aim to achieve our goals of completely rebuilding the primary school, improving the sanitation facilities and improving the irrigation for local agriculture.

Your generosity will be greatly appreciated by this impoverished community and will enable them to feed and educate themselves for many years to come.
