EMMS International Malawi Bike Ride · 7 January 2009

We work to provide access to quality healthcare for hard-to-reach communities in Malawi, Nepal, India, Rwanda, Zambia & the UK. Through developing palliative care, reducing the impact of disease & responding to healthcare emergencies, we tackle inequalities for those held back by sickness & poverty.

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page. We are cycling 260 miles across Malawi over 5 days in May 2009. The funds raised will be used to support Embangweni Hospital, which serves a remote population of 100,000 people in northern Malawi. General, maternity and HIV/AIDS services are provided from the hospital and satellite clinics.

The bike ride aims to raise funds to help build staff accommodation (which is desperately needed to attract staff), Ante Natal Accommodation, a new laundry, improved facilities for patients' guardians and a new children's ward. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an average income of just £76 per year. It has been devastated by HIV/AIDS, with over 80,000 deaths each year. There are an estimated 1.1 million AIDS orphans in the country. Malaria is also a significant challenge with almost 90,000 deaths each year. All this in a country with a population of just 14 million people.

The improvements to the hospital will make a massive difference to the lives of the local people. Thanks in advance for your support!!
