I'm sure you know by now that the theatre where I work in Newcastle is celebrating its 40th birthday in 2010.  To mark the occasion, and to make a start on a fundraising campaign to safeguard the next 40 years, we decided to set ourselves a bit of a challenge.  On July 3rd 2009 we set off from Haltwhistle in Northumberland, following a route along Hadrian’s Wall to walk 40 miles, finishing at the theatre in Newcastle.

 

Our sponsored walk took two days and involved an overnight camp near Chollerford.  I'm proud to say I managed to walk the whole 40 miles and enjoyed almost every minute of it, although in a snapshot of typical English summer we marched through everything from torrential rain to intense heat!  It was an amazing team effort and the people who didn't walk, who cooked and fed us, ferried overnight bags, set and struck camp, counted us all in and out of checkpoints, cheered us on and ensured all we had to do was walk - were just brilliant!

 

They say that Life begins at 40 and the funds raised from this and future events will help our company take a leap into a more ambitious and sustainable future. Supporting us will enable Northern Stage to continue creating fabulous theatre and provide even wider opportunities for people of all ages to get involved with the performing arts.
