Rowcroft Hospice provides free of charge care for people in South Devon living with life-threatening illnesses, while supporting their families and carers. The South Devon hospice provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support when people are seriously ill, either in the patient's home or at the hospice itself.

My story

Janet Clark (my mum and our friend) lost her brave fight against motor neurone disease in October 2008. She passed away peacefully at the Rowcroft Hospice. She was just 60 years old.

The Rowcroft provides palliative care to people across Torbay and South Devon at the hospice itself and in the community. For mum, they looked after her when she had her PEG tube fitted and she had two other in-patient stays where they cared for her so well. Mum loved the artistic and musical groups at the Rowcroft, and just walking in the beautiful grounds, taking photos of the wildlife.

They were a great support to Dad and the rest of the family too. Their care doesn't stop when someone dies - they continue to support through bereavement groups and other support networks. Quite simply, the hospice is a wonderful place. Which is why it is so sad that they have had to delay works on a new wing due to the credit crunch. A lot of the money they depend on comes from legacies, and the crash has meant that their investments have tumbled in value.

So, Liz C, Ali P and Liz W are running the Torbay Half Marathon to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful cause. As you well know, our abilities are varied, but we hope to finish in a combined time of about 5.5 hours - no prizes for guessing the order in which we'll finish - let's hope Liz W wins the race overall (and Ali finishes)!
