Story
I heard about this charity from a woman who I used to work with. Her brother is the founder and from Harrogate. We have supported this charity for 6 years now (well before Madonna discovered Malawi!) and its such a pleasure to see the all the money we give really makes a difference to these childrens' lives. Do have a look at their website to see how your money may be spent.
Open Arms Infant Home cares for infants from birth to 2 years old, most of whom have lost one or both parents because of AIDS. The aim is to care for these kids in the most difficult and expensive first stage of life and then place them back with extended family when the cost of caring for them has decreased and the family can adequately provide for their needs.
Open Arms also runs an outreach program and continues to provide resources to the families of these children after they have been taken home. There are also systems in place to continue caring for those children who cannot go back to family by setting up foster homes.
Some of the facts:-
- Approximately 850,000 children under the age of 18 have been orphaned in Malawi.
- Approximately 50% of these are due to Aids related deaths of one or both parents.
- Open Arms provide a second chance in life for Malawi's orphans.
- Their values revolve around the rights of a child to decent life expectations.
- Many infants are sick or terminally ill on admission to Open Arms.
