Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Our nurses work night and day in people’s homes and our hospices offer specialist care. We also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.

Story

On September 15th 2011 Team Un Pour La Route will be hitting the road!

We will be cycling from the Marie Curie Hospice Solihull to the Eiffel Tower, Paris in just four days! That's an average of 72 miles cycling per day! No mean feat even for the fittest cycling team…..

Collectively, the Team have set the target of raising at least £9,600 which will go towards the building of the brand new Marie Curie Hospice in Solihull.

Why “Un Pour La Route” - or translated - “One for the Road”? Well I’m not actually sure where or when it all started but the saying was adopted by my late wife Chris and I who used it on many occasions when the more sensible option would be to retire to bed having already consumed more than enough alcohol. The saying somehow seemed to allow us that one final drink, although our friends will testify it was rarely used just once in an evening.

During Chris’s last few weeks of her battle with cancer we spent some time at the hospice in Solihull. Whilst the hospice is an amazing place, staffed by wonderful & caring individuals, the building itself is tired and extremely inefficient and the need for the new facility is very evident. Like many people, we were fearful when Chris was first admitted into the unit but these fears were quickly dismissed by the comfort, care and reassurance from a team of true professionals that made us feel completely at ease. The hospice is a fabulous facility with truly dedicated people working in a very difficult environment.

This might seem strange, even perverse but some of the funniest moments of Chris’s last few weeks were while we were at the hospice!! Oh and a heads up for anyone living close to the hospice they are always in need of alcohol donations, the trolley bar opens nightly at 8pm.

So please dig deep and donate now.
