Flora London Marathon 2008 · 13 April 2008 ·

For over 45 years Phyllis Tuckwell has been supporting and caring for patients and families who have been given the worst possible news in West Surrey & North East Hampshire. We rely on the support of our community as we have to raise over £30,000 every day to continue our amazing services.

Story

Right, so for those of you who know me well will already know, I've never been and I've never wanted to be a runner and most definitely not one that runs 26.2 miles.  You'll also know that I've got a pretty big gob that quite often gets me into trouble, well it's done it again and come 13th April I'll be lining up with 40,000 far more eager and far better trained participants in this years London Marathon.

I'm a little late in getting this round and that's for the simple reason that up until Saturday I never actually thought I'd stand a chance of finishing a marathon!  Physically I knew I was strong enough but mentally was a very different matter.  My training has been going very well though and failing any disasters (like I get a small knock from a bus/car/motorcyclist which I was sort of hoping for about four weeks ago) I should stand a good chance of not just finishing but also finishing with a respectable time.

I thought I'd take my blood, sweat and although no tears yet, but there could be, as an opportunity to raise money for a charity that's very dear to my families hearts.

In March 2000 my Grandad passed away, he'd been suffering from Lung Cancer for many months and became very weak so was referred to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice where he spent the end of his days.  The hospice offers Specialist Palliative Care to those facing the end of their life, every day they support over 100 patients and carers in their own homes, in the community and at the Hospice. NHS funding is very minimal and they rely heavily on the support and generosity of the local community, but at £10,000 a day in operating costs they need more than they are getting currently so are facing uncertainty in the future.

Don’t be tight (Iwan) and please dig deep.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

Many thanks for your support.
