Trekking to Everest Base Camp will fulfil a lifelong ambition for me - but much more important is what it will do for VSO's work. In Nepal, a country where adult literacy is only 56%, VSO's educational work is making a real difference, particularly for women and Dalits (people from the "untouchable" underclass) who would not normally have access to education at all.

For trips like this, a portion of the funds raised usually goes towards the cost of the trip, with the rest supporting VSO's work around the world. But I have decided that I will pay the full cost myself, so that more of your money goes to help VSO, working harder for some of the poorest people on the planet.

It costs VSO £5.25 per day to support a volunteer, so £30 (plus gift aid) would pay for a full week of volunteering.
