<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">I work in East & North Herts NHS Trust as a Macmillan Breast Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist with patients diagnosed with Secondary Breast Cancer (SBC).</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Since coming into Post in March 2010 I have had over 120 patients referred to the service.</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">SBC is different to primary Breast Cancer in that the breast cancer cells have spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. Common sites include bones, skin, lungs & liver.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">SBC is <strong>NO</strong> respecter of age & is <strong>NOT</strong> curable however it can treated.</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Common challenges facing these patients include:-</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Consequently, patients with SBC can often feel unsupported. In East & North Herts Trust we have set up a SBC Support Group for patients, their families & carers. We meet every 4 weeks for 2 hours in a venue outside the hospital. Refreshments are served & outside speakers as chosen by the group attend the meetings to share their knowledge & information. The Group is always well attended & provides a very important role in supporting these patients & their families.</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 16.0pt;">Sadly there is no funding for the Group & we rely on grants & donations to continue to run the group monthly.</span></p>
