Safety Guy throws away the rule book and takes on a risk!!

What an absolutely fantastic experience, staring down at the ground from a height of 3500 feet, waiting for the parachute to open!! Luckily my parachute did open but that was the boring part! I didn't manage to raise as much money as I had hoped but, I'm confident many more people know about the dreadful disease.

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is an autoimmune disease which affects the liver.  To put it in simple terms it is when the body turns against its own liver and starts attacking it from inside out.  Not very nice!

Contrary to the stories that you may have heard, it’s not linked at all to alcohol or drug abuse and at present it has no known cause or cure.

The PBC Foundation concentrates on supporting sufferers and their families as, on many occasions, when the patients are diagnosed, the doctors know little about the condition and on several occasions patients have been told that they only have months to live.  The charity does not offer medical advice but we do talk to sufferers and point them in the right direction for more information.  For further information about this condition you can log onto the website at http://www.pbcfoundation.org.uk/

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is a slow, chronic liver disease which can cause progressive destruction of the bile ducts in the liver.  The bile ducts are the channels through which bile flows.  The body attacks the cells lining the bile ducts within the liver as if they are foreign to the body itself, i.e. attacking ones own cells.  This damage causes poor drainage of bile acids, which leak outwards and damage the normal liver cells.  This causes inflammation and scarring which may, after many years become extensive. This widespread damage and scarring is commonly called cirrhosis.  The cause of PBC is at present unknown, like many liver diseases, it requires further considerable research.

In order to help this charity my aim is to raise as much money as possible for sufferers of PBC. You need to remember that this is a progressive autoimmune liver condition and it is a dreadful condition and the only hope is for a liver transplant when the time is right.
