Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. On 13th April I shall be running the London Marathon in memory of my left lung, lost to lung cancer on 12th December 2006. Marathon day also marks the 1st anniversary of me finishing my chemo. One of my best friends, Heather Phillips is also running with me in aid of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. The following extract is taken from a letter written by Dame Judi Dench in her capacity as Patron of the 'Women against Lung Cancer Campaign' If you have time please read more by visiting http://www.roycastle.org/campaign/walcuk.htm 'Every year 38,000 patients are diagnosed with lung cancer, and 34,000 die from this dreadful disease. It is the biggest cancer killer for both men and women - more than breast, bowel and leukaemia put together. And yet, only 1.4% of the total research funding is spent on lung cancer research. The average prognosis for lung cancer patients from diagnosis to death is less than six months.' So I really am lucky to be amongst the survivors and be in a position to raise some money for the Roy Castle Foundation by running. One of the most frightening aspects of the cancer to me was how advanced it was before I developed any symptoms, ( the tumour was already about the size of a tennis ball). My symptoms were swollen ankles and fingers. No cough, no wheezing, no breathlessness, no weight loss. Lung cancer is a very nasty cancer which if left un diagnosed can prove fatal VERY quickly. The survival rates are shockingly low but It doesn't seem to attract much public sympathy or funding. Any donation you can make will be most gratefully received. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost If you want any further information please go to http://www.roycastle.org/campaign/index.htm Or if you have any questions about my personal experience of lung cancer please email me jeanclark1961@mac.com Many thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement. Look out for us on the day! Love Jean xx
